Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools in order to provide them with an attribute bonus, or a special effect, while they are being used. They can be obtained by crafting, purchased from vendors or at the trading post, or looted or obtained as a reward. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Upgrade components fall into two categories - universal and type-restricted. Universal upgrades, such as gemstones, are able to be placed in any kind of equipment, while type-restricted upgrades, such as inscriptions, must be placed in certain types of objects to gain their bonuses.

The majority of upgrade components can be retrieved from the equipment they are currently installed in, but some can only be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Ascended armor and legendary gear may also contain upgrade components that can only be retrieved with an Black or Ascended Salvage Kit. Upgrades that are already inserted into an item can't be swapped out for another upgrade of the same type. Glyphs are able to be swapped in and out of collecting tools.
Glyphs could be replaced by other glyphs. The upgraded item will show the original upgrade and the new one when you hover over it. Inscriptions add their own name to the item they alter, and can be viewed by right-clicking on an upgraded weapon or piece of gear.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to create additional text features. They are typically based on icons or other symbols visually associated with the concept they represent however, they can be totally abstract. Glyphs are defined by Unicode, which assigns a specific code to each symbol and allows them to be referenced in different fonts. Certain glyphs can be found in multiple forms, like swashes or small caps. Some glyphs only have one form, such as the capital letter A. The Glyphs Panel includes a search field that allows you to filter by the name of a glyph, its CID, GID or Unicode value. You can also use the context menu for the character to create a new character or alter the glyph.
The context menu of the Glyphs Panel allows you to select a font that will be used for glyphs in the set. You can also select to keep a font in mind with an added glyph. If a glyph has more than one font The Glyphs panel displays the font selection in pink.
The glyph metrics of a font affect the way text is laid out. For instance, a glyph may have an advance width that is the length of space it takes from its beginning point to the end of the font. The glyph could also have side bearings which are white spaces on the left or right sides of the font. These side bearings are sometimes called kerning, and they affect how the glyph will be displayed in the document.
Glyphs can be upgraded within the Nightmare Dungeons at the Glyph Upgrade Altar. The Glyph Upgrade Altar will be revealed after the specified amount of time has passed in every Nightmare Dungeon. The altar will allow players to spend the Glyph XP they've earned by playing the dungeon and it will also boost all of the nearby Paragon Board nodes in its radius.
Each glyph comes with its own primary stat and secondary stat bonuses that can be added to the hero's total. These bonuses can help you decide which glyphs to upgrade and where to put them on the Paragon Board.
